Theophilus Stewart, who is my great grandfather is truly a remarkable man! He was involved in the AME ministry (African Methodist Episcopal), who wrote several books, journals, and preached the word of the gospel within the United States, and overseas in the Philippines, USA Georgia, Haiti, and several other important destinations. He was one of the very first African-American chaplains in the US Army Calvary, and was a prestigious member of the Buffalo soldiers. He was licensed to preach at 20 years of age, and at 21 he entered the ministry of the AME church. While in the southern part of the US, he was active in “Reconstruction” politics. During 1865, he preached and taught in South Carolina and Georgia. He wrote the platform upon which the Republican Party of Georgia was first organized, and returning to the north in 1871, by appointment of his Church, reopened the missions in the island of Haiti. On his return, he took a full course in theology at the Protestant Episcopal Divinity school in Philadelphia, and also studied in the school of Elocution there. He also worked as an educator at Wilberforce University and in the Philippines, where he served as chaplain to the 25th US Colored Infantry regiment. As mentioned earlier, Theophilus wrote numerous books on subject, ranging from military history to theology some of his books, including “Essay on Death”, “Hades and the Resurrection”, “The End of the world”, and “Genesis Re Read (Philadelphia 1885)” His autobiography “50 years in the gospel ministry (1921)”, was his last book. His lifetime accomplishments, where that he spent 27 years in the Pastorate Ministry, 16 years, active service as chaplain in the US Army, 7 years professor in Wilberforce University, then finally two trips to Europe. His life and work is well chronicled throughout all sorts of literature, and he was a man of brilliance, and intelligence, and was very religious and kind. Theophilus Gould Steward’s lifetime achievements were so instrumental in the annals of Black Historical connotations, that his life was depicted by actor “Ben Rowe”, presented by Cultural Caravan TV, in a real-life Documentary, narrated by Dr. William Seraile on all Steward’s stellar work, depicted in a YouTube video, titled “Dissent….on the Life and Times of Theophilus Gould Steward”
